    • You know some theory but don’t know how to apply it to playing or improvising.

    • You find it hard to memorise or recall scales and chords.

    • You struggle to find notes that work well together.

    • You have no idea how to write melodies or harmonies.

    • You don’t know where or how to start improvising.

    • You play random notes or chords and hope it sounds good.

    • You find it hard to play using the entire fretboard.

    • Your solos or riffs lack groove.

    • You want to build strumming and picking speed but you are stuck.

    • Your playing feels sloppy because you can’t hit the right strings cleanly.

    • Your have trouble muting open strings, which ring out and make unwanted noise.

    • Your playing feels rigid and stiff.

    • You’ve lost motivation because progress feels slow.

    • You compare yourself to other guitarists who just seem better.

    • You have a busy life so finding time to practice is hard.

    • Your skills and content don’t get recognition.

At some point I had experienced all of these, but my biggest roadblock was the actually the feeling of guitar becoming boring.

I realised I was playing the same things over and over - the same basic open chords, strumming patterns and simple song tabs.

So I tried writing my own stuff, but struggled because I had no idea how to make pieces that sounded good, let alone how to improvise.

I even had some basic understanding of music theory, but didn’t really know how to properly apply it.

However, I knew I wanted to be a guitarist who could have fun by freely jamming cool and inspiring riffs.

There had to be a solution, so I started breaking things down.

From Repetitive Riffs to Rhythmic Revelation: My Journey to Creative Guitar Playing

At the time - almost a decade ago - I wasn’t able to afford a private guitar teacher, so I turned to the internet to try teach myself.

Although I had a background in bass guitar, with electric guitar I had no idea where to start…

Me playing (bass) guitar, 2011

So I would watch endless (often boring) YouTube tutorials, decipher numerous confusing forums, deconstruct and analyse a bunch of my favourite songs, or simply sit down with my guitar and just try find what works by feel.

But over several long years, I conquered a number of obstacles which have gotten me to where I am today.

Above all, here are the most important ones. I:

✨ Finally understood music theory - chords, intervals, modes and more - in a way that actually made sense.

✨ Trained my ears to recognise chord changes and harmonies, instead of relying on memorising sequences.

✨ Discovered how to play relaxed and maintain composure, so I could play fast!

✨ Learned all sorts of chords, including bar chords - everyone’s worst enemy - which unlocked fretboard visualisation.

✨ Developed my left hand muting and right hand strumming technique, helping me sound like a pro.

The result - I was able to break free and become a confident, skilled and eternally inspired guitarist who could create and play by ear. No more repetitive playing.

This was great. However, music wasn’t ever played to be enjoyed alone.

The Power of Community

I’ll never forget my early days playing bass in the high school jazz band. We’re talking 2012 to 2016!

High School Jazz Band, 2012

Although I gained a lot of skills and knowledge, what stuck with me most was the feeling of community.

Being in a group helped me improve just by being around other musicians, many of whom far better than me.

I’ll never forget that I always felt:

🤝 Accountable and motivated to improve my skills, knowledge, and musicianship.

🤝 Comfortable being able to turn to others for help whenever I was stuck on a passage or idea.

🤝 A strong sense of involvement, community and dependency.

🤝 Excited and thrilled, because and I had the best time playing and learning with others.

What Andy’s Students Have Said:

“After receiving an online lesson from Andy I felt like I really took away a new love for chords and rhythms. The progressions he writes are pleasing and his communication just as pleasant.”

Dave Connell (@pineappleguitarist), USA

“Andy’s lessons completely changed the way I play. His breakdowns and lesson structure gave me so much control, speed, and precision. The content he creates isn’t just educational—it’s inspiring. If you’re thinking about improving your skills, Andy is definitely the guy to learn from.”

Nathan Seguel (@gidseguel), Chile

“Andy’s class was amazing and fun. I liked the way Andy simplified chord progressions and melodies so well that I picked up a song in a day while making me understand its concepts, especially funk patterns & chord progressions. He’s so patient, polite, and always open to questions. I truly enjoy learning with Andy and look forward to more sessions.”
